Otoplasty - Ear Surgery
Otoplasty is the surgical correction of protruding ears, abnormalities in the shape of the ears and asymmetry between two ears. It may be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. The procedure is often performed at a younger age, not only because of more pliable cartilage, but because of the negative social interaction that may be experienced which could have an impact on a child's psychological development. Adults often benefit from this surgery for similar reasons.
The Procedure
Otoplastic ear surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis in Dr. Galoob's AAAHC accredited office surgical facility using local anesthesia with or without IV sedation. There are two principal objectives for this surgery. First, the ears are re-positioned closer to the head ("pinned back"); second the cartilage is sculpted to create the folds and contours that may not have developed adequately. The incisions are behind the ear where they are not visible.
Following Surgery
A bandage is worn for several days following surgery. This protects the ears and allows them to heal in their new flatter position. The stitches will dissolve in four to six weeks. Usually there is some bruising and swelling which will go away in about a week.
Most adults can return to work in about five days, and children can go back to school (without participating in strenuous activity) after about one week. The patient will need to wear a cotton headband for about a month to help prevent injury before proper healing.
